Heirloom tomatoes

The Pometa is a salad tomato with hardly any acidity, one of the gastronomic gems of the Maresme region north of Barcelona.

This local variety was at the point of extinction, like so many heirloom varieties, during the late 1970s when “hybrid” fever and high demand pushed farmers to focus on growing ever more quantities of tomatoes with no regard for their quality. The low production yields of the Pometa made it too expensive for the market, and it quickly fell out of favour with farmers.

Recently recovered from heirloom stocks, the still limited production means that this special tomato is not widely known.

We are currently featuring the pometa in our contemporary interpretation of the Catalan classic “pa amb tomàquet” : heirloom tomato sorbet, extra virgin olive oil, toasted peasant bread, garlic “air”, and “llonganisa” sausage from the town of Vic.
